Herpetology in Spain: a current overview through doctoral theses

This study summarizes the temporal variation, relative contribution of each university, research topics addressed, taxonomic groups studied and differences in author its advisors’ gender 303 PhD theses on herpetology defended Spain gathered Teseo© Dialnet© between 1977 2020. The number per year is around 7 with an upward trend. Complutense Autonomous University Madrid universities hosted highest theses, followed by Barcelona Valencia universities. most addressed topic was morphology, biometry anatomy, physiology histology, genetics habitat selection. herpetofauna orders were Squamata Anura families tackled Lacertidae, Ranidae Salamandridae. species native to without protection status, as opposed those that non-native or status. invasive very poorly represented. men higher compared women (1.43:1), however, both genders show trend theses. results represent approximation development, trends interests pursued herpetological Spain.
